Invisalign: A Near Death Experience
I would like to tell my story of a near fatal experience wearing Invisalign braces. I was 54 years old at the time, and have always been active and in great shape. I didn't even take any medication, except, Estrogen. I am, overly sensitive to chemicals and medications. I might be one in a million to have such a severe reaction, but even if I help one other person I will feel good.
My dentist said that it would take two years with Invisalign because my teeth were so crooked. I started with them in November of 2017. My dentist was proud of me because he knew I was very disciplined and kept them in the required time. He said most people cheated and didn't wear them as many hours as suggested.
In early 2018 I started feeling poorly, tired, and achy. I went to a Rheumatologist, because I thought I had Fibromyalgia, I knew my mom had it. I was given blood tests and it was found that I had a slight hypothyroid condition. That doctor sent me to an Endocrinologist. I could not tolerate any of the medication that he gave me. He said that I was a very interesting patient because my Thyroid levels kept going up and down.
He sent me back to the Rheumatologist to see if maybe I had an autoimmune problem. I took more extensive blood tests. Nothing conclusive was discovered.
Meanwhile, I was getting worse. I could barely get around. I was weak and so tender and achy; I had to get up from sitting very slowly. My hair was falling out at an alarming rate, and was dull and straight. My eyebrows were also falling out. My vision was changing, my fingernails developed ridges and were curling up. I was unable to tolerate the heat.I had several acute spells where I literally thought I was going to die. It felt as though my life force was completely draining out of me.
By April of 2019 I had completely baffled the doctors. In early October of 2019, I was so scared. I was also having issues with my indigestion. Burping all the time, gas and a sever pain in my stomach. Also, at times my throat would feel like it was closing and I completely lost my appetite.
I decided to go to a gastrointestinal specialist. He ordered an Endoscopy and Colonoscopy test, which I done the first part of November 2009. The results were negative.
I was finally finished with the braces the last week of October 2019.
Only two weeks after finishing with the braces, I started to feel better. By the third week in November, my hair was shiny and back to normal, I had energy, my stomach issues disappeared. My nails were growing faster and looked normal. I joined a gym, and in a couple of weeks I felt about 10 years younger. I was suddenly feeling better than I had before the Invisalign.
I was disappointed that no one could figure out what was wrong with me. I started thinking what changed in my life in the last two years. INVISALIGN !!!! I started researching and found that some people had low levels of a toxic reaction. I knew I was on the right track. I found that some types of polyurethane contain cyanide, and when it breaks down the chemical composition changes.
It has been suggested that all dentists do a blood test to determine if the patient has a problem with plastics in dental appliances. All the people who care about me say I should sue the makers of the product, but all I really want to do is to make people aware, and try and get some kind of sensitivity test for all patients considering all types of dental appliances.
Thanks for your time, please tell anyone you know about this issue.

I read the thread and a couple of people touched on what I think the issue is. Firstly, diarrhea and the like, is not uncommon with “healthy” people who have orthodontics. I have a tooth chart in my cupboard which points out which organs are associated with each teeth and moving them will have consequences. One poster in the thread mentioned that “it’s worst for the first few days of each replacement mouth brace”,,,which is when I wouyld assume that most movement/stress occurs. The fact the poster felt better following treatment than before indicates, possibly, that straight teeth are better for your health than wonky ones. If it’s true that each tooth may affect organs and meridians, then how they’re set agsinst each other (straightened) should have affects too. No doubt the affect of moving teeth in a person with a chronic low health illness would probably have more pronounced affects than a “healthy” individual. It’s possible, too, that it’s not a good idea for a chronically ill person to seek out orthodontics and likewise, potentially, it could be a good thing for the same person, as it seems to have, ultimately, improved the health of the O.P. I certainly think the plastics could be a problem for someone who is very sensitive but I’d guess that it’s by no means the only issue here. Could not the plastic be “cured” with some ozone? I was looking at Invisalign for my son as the healthy, and mnore easy to put up with, option compared to train tracks and the like. I still think it is, at least for “healthy” folk.
I developed a bad case of fatigue while using this product. There should be a way to get the money back in these types of cases. Would this be similar to medical malpractice? Even if not, we should be able to bring a class action lawsuit. Do you agree?
Hello, This message is for all and especially Jollie. I have been wearing invisalign for two months now. Before invisalign I was full of energy, had a full head of soft hair. I have noticed after 2 months now, I am extremely tired all the time, lots of fatigue. Also the scariest part is that I have noticed my hair getting brittle, dry and thin in some areas. I know that as men age they start losing some hair but not this quickly. I really feel that as soon as I started wearing the invisalign this started happening. I have a very healthy diet and eat very nutritious food and take lots of vitamins. I am getting really worried and am considering discontinuing the invisalign treatment. Jollie, can you tell me if you started feeling better and noticed your hair go back to normal after the treatment was over?? And what I should expect?
Hi Jollie Place (& Jeffrey),
Welcome to the site both of you and thank you (Jollie) for sharing your dreadful experience with invisalign in such detail. I was utterly shocked by how bad you got (and now Jeffrey also). I am so relieved for you that your ill-health reversed so quickly after you finished using the braces – I fear others might not recover so quickly – though hope for Jeffrey’s sake I’m wrong (please see your dentist / orthodontist ASAP and mention Jollie’s experience my friend – sending prayers).
We actually had another member post in the old EiR Forums about worsening of her chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) after using Invisalign. Hopefully I can recover it from the Web Archive (Way Back Machine).
Thank you again for sharing. I have no doubt your post will help a great many people avoid the dangers posed by Invisalign. I myself want to have my teeth straightened as they became crooked after my wisdom teeth came through. I think I will go for regular braces – I wore a mask whenever anybody saw me for 5 or 6 years due to MCS (before Covid-19 pandemic made it “normal”), so I should be able to handle a mouth full of metal for 18 months or so..
It seems anyone wearing Invisalign braces should remove them immediately (under professional dental care). What frightening stories from your original post Jollie and from Jeffrey’s comment.
Anyway Jollie, enjoy your renewed health and fitness and hope to see you on EiR again soon!
So, I put invisalign in 2 weeks ago. I just put in my second tray. About day 2-3 I started to feel just a chronic feeling of fatigue. A severe fatigue one call it. Literally sleeping on and off for 5 hours during the day even after sleering 7 hours at night. Frankly, I don’t feel good at all. I could only think it had somethimg to do with the invisalign Because it was the only change I’ve made. I thought maybe it was just the invisalign interfering with my sleep and that I would adjust. Well at almost two weeks of feeling horrible, I come across this. Just amazing…. have they done any further research on this? I can’t continue to feel like this. In a few days if the fatigue persist, I’ll have to remove the tray… so disappointing, but thank you for posting this. At least I have an answer now.
